The goal of the course is to enhance knowledge and practical skills relevant to the fundamentals of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics for design. Fluid properties such as density and viscosity, fluid statics, Bernoulli's equation, flow profiles, losses, flow regimes and turbomachinery. Thermodynamic properties such as heat capacity, latent heat, modes of heat transfer, heat transfer coefficients and graphical analysis of common thermodynamic processes. Students will develop teamwork and problem solving skills through various classroom and laboratory activities and are expected to demonstrate a good understanding around the key themes identified. Assessment will be a mix of examination and practical assessment.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:Demonstrate understanding of the fundamental concepts of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics relevant to industrial design.Apply the fundamental theories and equations of fluid flow to problem scenarios relating to common applications.Apply the fundamental theories and equations of heat transfer to problem scenarios relating to common applications.Work as a team for the design and production of laboratory-based tasks and reporting thereon.Produce clear, concise summaries on material generated throughout laboratory activities and communicate concepts to peers
PROD112 and either 15 points of MATH/EMTH at 100-level or 15 points of PHYS at 100-level
