This one-time special topic introduces students to accessible mechatronics through the design and creation of interactive objects, with an emphasis on creativity and practical application. Delivered by Erskine Fellow Dr. Lucy Rogers, the course offers students a unique opportunity to engage with international expertise in product design. This hands-on course introduces students to the design, construction, and programming of interactive electronic products and automata. Students will learn to integrate mechanical systems, electronics, and programmable control to create functional prototypes and connected devices. The course covers essential topics including mechanical systems, soldering, circuit protection, Raspberry Pi and Arduino programming, and wireless communication (IoT). Through project-based learning, students will develop their ability to design, build, and present innovative products that combine electronics, mechanical motion, and real-time connectivity, with a strong emphasis on practical skills, creativity, and effective technical communication. Open to all students from any background, with no prior programming experience needed to begin this fun and interactive course.
