Description

This course provides an introduction to the field of Industrial Organisational Psychology (I/O Psychology). It will examine the applications of psychological theory and research to the workplace, in particular the contribution of I/O Psychology to enhanced organizational performance and improved employee attitudes. It is a prerequisite for entry into the postgraduate programme in Industrial/Organizational Psychology.

The purpose of this course is to familiarise the students with the field of Industrial Organisational Psychology (I/O Psychology). This course will examine the applications of psychological theory and research to the workplace, in particular the contribution of I/O Psychology to enhanced organizational performance and improved employee attitudes.

Goals of the Course:
• To familiarise students with the field of Industrial/Organisational Psychology
• To prepare students to undertake postgraduate study in Industrial/Organisational Psychology and related disciplines
• To provide students planning to enrol in APSY courses with an introductory understanding of Industrial/Organisational Psychology
• To facilitate competence development relevant to Industrial/Organisational Psychology research and practice

Learning Outcomes

  • A graduate of the course will be expected to:

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of the principal theories in the field and understand their applicability to the workplace
  • Identify and apply the methods and tools used by I/O psychologists, and understand their implications for personnel decisions
  • Identify the antecedents and outcomes of workplace attitudes, and demonstrate basic knowledge of the principal strategies employed by leaders to manage those attitudes
  • Demonstrate basic understanding of the impact of group and organisational structure on workforce perceptions, attitudes, behaviours
  • Critically evaluate material presented in journal articles
