Health psychology is a rapidly emerging field of basic and applied research looking at the interplay between psychological processes and physical health. Health psychology seeks to understand the role behaviour plays in the development, treatment and prevention of disease. This paper provides an introduction to health psychology. Topics include: health behaviour change, community health promotion, biopsychosocial pathways of health and illness, stress and coping, psychological aspects of illness, patient care and chronic disease management.

On successfully completing the course, students will be able to: Demonstrate an understanding of the main theories in health psychology. Demonstrate how health psychology contributes to an understanding of the complex interplay between physical well-being and a variety of biological, psychological and social factors.Apply health psychology theory and research to real life questionsDesign a behavioural intervention to change a personal health behaviour using principles from the course.Use knowledge of statistics and research to confidently engage with the health psychology literature.
