Description

This is the second of two advanced Russian language courses. It aims at improving students' all-round knowledge of contemporary Russian language and communication skills. In addition, students' translation skills will be enhanced through work on media sources and fictional texts.

This is the second of two advanced Russian language courses. It aims to advance students’
language skills; its focus is on contemporary colloquial Russian. It aims to further enhance
students’ abilities to converse and write in Russian, improving their skills in translating and
composition.

Learning Outcomes

  • After successful completion of this course students will have:
  • develop more understanding of global conditions and will become competent in
    engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts. This will help the language students
    to develop knowledge and attributes sought by employers that can be used in a range
    of applications.
  • have examined cultural beliefs and values in Russia, which in turn students will
    develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for cultures other than their own,
    including the nature of biculturalism in Aotearoa New Zealand be able to comprehend
    the influence of global conditions on Russia and be competent in engaging with global
    and multi-cultural contexts;
  • develop specific linguistic skills in Russian that will enhance students’ opportunities
    for a successful career;
  • develop linguistic skills to engage and interact with members of the Russian-speaking
    community in New Zealand and the ability to understand a wide range of sentence
    structures;
  • develop a firm understanding of advanced level prose;
  • develop an understanding of sociolinguistic registers;
  • develop familiarity with journalistic prose, formal, and informal use of language;
  • develop critical thinking via close-readings, argumentative presentations, and group
    discussions
  • develop the ability to compose prose using a variety of sentence structures, idiomatic
  • expressions and link words;
  • develop a heightened linguistic sensitivity facilitating the acquisition of other non-
    English languages;
