This is a language specific translation course whose aim is to provide students with a solid understanding of the main issues involved in Translation Studies. This course will have both theoretical and practical components, with an emphasis on the connections between translation theory and practice. It will introduce students to the main grammatical and translation-related concepts and strategies necessary to achieve equivalence effects between source and target language. This will be achieved by concentrating on those areas in the relationship between English and Spanish which are characterized by non-equivalence.
The course is designed to build on the linguistic skills and cultural awareness which students would have acquired in previous courses while expanding their critical and analytical skills.The main objective of this course is to provide students with a solid understanding of the main issues involved in Translation Studies, looking specifically at their relevance and application in the translation from English into Spanish and vice versa. The course will have both theoretical and practical components, with an emphasis on the connections between translation theory and practice, preparing students for the workplace in Aotearoa New Zealand or for further studies.Furthermore, because of its focus on Spanish, this course will deepen students’ knowledge of semantic fields, targeting the use and translation of idioms and enhancing their overall linguistic knowledge and confidence through a variety of exercises designed to practice language use in a range of registers, genres, and contexts.
On successful completion of this module students will have:1. Achieved a critical awareness of the main issues of Translation Studies and their relevance for translation fieldwork.2. Developed sophisticated language skills through the analysis and translation of authentic contemporary material.3. Achieved an awareness of grammatical concepts and their equivalence in both source text and target text.4. Achieved an awareness of typical translation problems between English and Spanish and the ability to identify them in both directions (source language > target language, target language > source language).5. Acquired the ability, having recognized typical translation problems, to apply appropriate strategies for their solution, choosing appropriate, natural TL lexical and grammatical solutions.6. Acquired various transferable skills including time management, communication, critical and analytical skills, and an awareness of cultural issues which will prepare the students for the workplace in Aotearoa or further study.
