An introduction to the history and philosophy of physical education, physical activity and sport, critiquing the development of movement culture with particular reference to New Zealand sport development and physical education. In order to understand the nature and purpose of contemporary movement contexts, this course provides historical and philosophical frameworks.
1. Relate the significance of various periods of history to the development of modern sport.2. Recognise different approaches to understanding play, games, and sport.3. Explain how contemporary ideas and practices related to physical activity and sport have been influenced by historical factors.4. Understand the historical development of Māori sport practice.5. Demonstrate an understanding of the role and significance of sport in historical and contemporary New Zealand society.6. Describe the historical significance of the modern Olympic movement.
