Sport Management in New Zealand is experiencing a noted increase in professional organisational management approaches as well as maintaining a strong volunteer base at grass-roots level. Effective sport managers need to have a varying set of skills and be aware of best practices for the effective management of people, club and sporting events. Volunteer management, funding sources/models, development models, marketing, technology and other future issues will be discussed for the wide variety of sport organisations in New Zealand, from clubs to fitness centres to national/regional sports organisations.
By the end of the course, successful students will be able to:1. Assess the importance of the effectiveness and appropriateness of management structures and theories in sport organisations.2. Compare and contrast the range of leadership principles of leading people in sport organisations (staff, volunteers and other stakeholders).3. Recognise positive leadership and its impacts on leadership in sports organisations.4. Critically demonstrate an application of best practices for management and leadership from club to regional and national sport organisations in the New Zealand context and global trends.5. Critically evaluate marketing, fundraising, sponsorship, event management, governance, human resources, financial, and other leadership and management issues in sport organisations.6. Analyse strategic planning and implications in the leadership of sport organisations.
Any 60 points at 100 level from any subject, orany 15 points at 100 level from SPCO.
Students must attend one activity from each section.
