This course examines sociological and pedagogical theories and practices related to sport for athletes with disabilities. Historical and contemporary perspectives will be critiqued and students will gain an understanding of the implications of these perspectives for sporting environments. The course will provide students with the opportunity to apply inclusive coaching practices in a variety of settings.
1. Analyse how historical and contemporary perspectives on participation, inclusion, and equity have influenced current sport, physical activity, and physical education practices. 2. Interpret and apply selected sociological theories to contemporary issues relating to participation, inclusion, equity, and representation in sport, physical activity, and physical education. 3. Evaluate current policies and frameworks that impact participation, inclusion, and equitable outcomes in sport, physical activity, and physical education within Aotearoa New Zealand. 4. Critically examine systems, structures, and practices that influence access, participation, recognition, and achievement in sport, physical activity, and physical education. 5. Demonstrate an understanding of diverse participant needs and aspirations, and design, implement, and evaluate inclusive coaching, teaching, leadership, or participation strategies in sport, physical activity, and physical education settings.
