This course explores and applies Kaupapa Maori philosophies and pedagogies in traditional and contemporary physical activity, recreation and sport (PARS) contexts. It reinforces Maori (Indigenous) ways of being, doing, thinking and traditional knowledge practices. The course uses purakau and oral histories appropriately to embed aspects of these methods in contemporary PARS programmes including sport coach education, teaching and learning settings. Theoretical content of the Maori worldview is considered through applied practices with and for Maori communities, focussing on five key topics: (1) tangata (people); (2) whenua (place); (3) waka (canoes); (4) moana (water/ocean) and (5) rangi (sky) environments. Akonga will gain a deeper understandings of themselves and others in connection to the environment, refining their understanding of whakapapa (genealogy), matauranga Maori (knowledge) and tikanga (custom, protocol) as practiced and theorised in the past, present and future.
