This course provides the opportunity for students to make sense of their image of the child and to apply this to their practice. Students will debate the differences between a range of indigenous and Western paradigms of learning and development. This will allow students to develop their own position in relation to decision making alongside current policy and practice.

Learning Outcomes

  • On the successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Critically analyse the theories of learning and development, including Māori and Pasifika epistemologies, that have shaped and continue to influence early childhood education in Aotearoa New Zealand
  • Critically reflect on a range of paradigms of childhood and how these transform teaching practices for diverse learners in diverse contexts.
  • Analyse how the image of the child is influenced by paradigms of learning and development
