Description

This course provides opportunities for students from the BTchLn (Primary) and BTchLn (Early Childhood) who have an interest in digital technologies and e-learning to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them to adopt leadership roles in this area in the future. The course extends the digital technologies learning included in other courses in the Bachelor of Teaching and Learning, including Professional Practice. This course also provides scaffolding for entry into Postgraduate qualifications (endorsed in e-Learning and Digital Technologies) offered at the university.

*Please note this course is only available to initial teacher education students. To enrol in this course you need to be accepted and enrolled in one of our Initial Teacher Education programmes.

E-learning technologies carry the potential to transform teaching and learning through the use of digital tools and the blending of online and virtual environments into our educational practice. In this course we focus on how to use e-learning to enhance learning for all learners, and consider ways in which we can teach through the use of digital technologies. This course will touch upon some of the content of the Digital Technologies | Hangarau Matihiko curriculum, which is learning about Digital Technologies and how they work.  Opportunities will be provided to engage with a range of e-learning technologies, and to develop your digital literacy as you consider ways to effectively incorporate e-learning into your own future focussed teaching practice.

This course is taught fully online for all students.

Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
1. Demonstrate the innovation, creative and reflective attitudes and digital literacy required to be a ‘future-focused’ teacher
2. Identify, select and re-purpose digital technologies and e-learning environments to transform teaching and learning  across a range of contexts within early childhood and primary school settings
3. Describe how a range of digital technologies and e-learning environments can support bicultural, inclusive and differentiated teaching and learning approaches
4. Critique the ways that digital technologies, digital literacies and culture are impacting teaching and learning in local and global contexts
5. Demonstrate an understanding of digital citizenship, ethics and safety in online and networked environments

Prerequisites

A minimum of 90 points from 200 level BTchLn (Early Childhood) or BTchLn (Primary) courses, including TEPI and TEPP courses.
