Description

This course will guide students in the development of a professional framework for their work with children, families, and colleagues. It will examine the role and responsibilities of the ECE teacher. Students will learn how to integrate theory and practice.

Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Discuss and critique the content and intent of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in relation to the role of an early childhood teacher.
2. Explain the professional responsibilities as stated by Teaching Council in Our Code Our Standards.
3. Identify their personal values, beliefs and attitudes and critically reflect on how these may influence their emerging identities as an early childhood teacher.
4. Discuss the factors that influence social and emotional competence and the role of teachers in guiding young children’s behaviour.
5. Critically analyse the theories of learning and development to articulate the prominence and relevance of Māori epistemologies alongside Western epistemologies for early childhood education in Aotearoa New Zealand
6.    Articulate the relevance of Pasifika epistemologies for early childhood education in Aotearoa New Zealand
