This course provides students with opportunities to progress towards the demonstration of appropriate competencies and professional qualities. The course focuses on becoming a teacher as it is closely linked to Professional Inquiry 2. Associate Teachers assist the College to assess students' developing competence as a teacher.
On the successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:Reflect on the responsibilities and relationships associated with the teaching of infants, toddlers and young children at a Year 2 level.Demonstrate professional dispositions at a satisfactory level or above.Demonstrate competencies at a satisfactory level or above.Demonstrate the ability to set and achieve goals and engage in reflective practice as appropriate for a Year 2 student.

Assessment procedures will follow the established policies of the UC College of Education Assessment Guidelines. Assessment for professional practice placements is competency based. See the ‘Assessment Guidelines for Students’ for further information on grades and criteria.Details of Assessment:Students will be placed in an early childhood setting for a period of four weeks. Students will meet the dispositions and competencies for a Year 2 placement as detailed in the TEPP Report Book and will complete all other requirements as set out in the TEPP report book and portfolio.
A student seeking credit in any course must attend such lectures and perform satisfactorily such oral, practical, written and other work as the Head of Department/School concerned may require. (University of Canterbury Calendar 2015, p.43)Students are expected to attend all scheduled course sessions, actively engage with course content and actively participate in course activities in order to meet the learning outcomes for PP.Insufficient attendance in courses (less than 80% attendance) may make students ineligible for professional practice.Full attendance in an allocated ECE Centre for the duration of the practicum, for at least eight hours each day, is a requirement. Please refer to the PP handbook for further information.Students will attend a debriefing interview with their PP lecturer after the placement concludes. This interview wil be conducted at a University of Canterbury campus or via flexible delivery mechanisms.
Formal and informal evaluation will take place in accordance with the relevant Course Evaluation Policy, to provide feedback to staff about the relevance and validity of what has been learned as well as the quality of course delivery.
The courses will be internally moderated in accordance with the processes adopted by the College of Education. An examiners’ meeting will be held at the end of the course to determine the final grades and to ensure fairness and consistency.
If you are prevented from completing any major item or items of work for assessment in a course, or consider that your performance in any major item or items of work for assessment in a course has been impaired by illness, injury, bereavement or any other critical circumstance you may apply for aegrotat consideration. Aegrotat consideration is available only for major items of work. Major items are examinations, tests and other work worth not less than 10% of the total assessment.
