Description

An intensive beginner's course in Maori language for those with no previous background in Te Reo Maori. Students will learn basic informal and formal greetings, introductory songs, proverbs, idiom, including a variety from Ngai Tahu, how to introduce themselves, express family relationships and the course will enable them to hold a basic conversation. This is a highly recommended language option for those who might work with Maori people or who just wish to familiarise themselves with the language. Students who have been credited with higher level TREO language courses cannot credit TREO 110. Students with prior knowledge or who are literate and/or fluent speakers of Te Reo may not enrol in this course without the permission of the Programme Director.

Ko taku reo taku ohooho, ko taku reo taku mapihi mauria - My language is my awakening, my language is the window to my soul.  TREO110 is an intensive beginner’s course in Māori language. This paper is great for anyone who is interested in gaining a familiarity with the building blocks of Te Reo. You’ll learn an extensive vocabulary and how to hold a basic conversation in Māori. In addition you will develop your own mihi so you will be able to confidently and appropriately introduce yourself in Māori situations.

TREO110 will give you the confidence to use Te Reo Māori in the workplace and at home. You’ll learn proper tikanga or protocol and correct pronunciation so that you can be more comfortable with your Māori language skills. The main focus will be on simple conversation aspects like greetings, farewells, introductions and songs. This paper is ideal for people that want to be more comfortable in a variety of Māori settings, from marae based events to working with Māori people. TREO110 provides a broad understanding of the values behind Te Reo Māori so you can better understand the significance of language and its place in Māori culture.

Pathways from this course are almost unlimited. Even at a beginner level, Te Reo Māori is immensely useful for teachers, journalists or any government workers who would like to be more confident with the language and culture of Māori people.

Course Goals
• Introduce beginners of all ages to the building blocks of Māori language and basic conversation.
• Students introduced to applications of Te Reo in Te Aō Māori (the Māori world) including some key protocols.

• Gain the skills to be confident moving onto further study in Te Reo Māori.
