Description

This is an extended project in which students will complete the translation of a substantial source text of their choice of at least 10000 words and will supplement the translation with a research essay of 10-12000 words in which they reflect critically on the translatability of the chosen text, on their translation strategy as well as on various theoretical issues pertinent to their translation choices. For students working on a project of interpreting issues, they will complete an essay of 20,000 words on at least three interpreting tasks, reflecting on challenges, issues and solutions on the task. The reflection must be connected to theoretical frameworks chosen for the discussion of their interpreting performance and/or quality. This work will be supervised by a staff member from the relevant language programme or an external assessor if required.

Learning Outcomes

As a student in this course, you will gain practical experience and theoretical expertise in the fields of T&I, translating and reflecting on T&I tasks and scenarios. This portfolio will better equip you to practice T&I tasks and to theorise issues at stake, whether these occur textually or in the real world. Students will have an ability to apply the theories and methodologies studied in other T&I courses, and to better home in on self-reflective analyses.
