An introduction to the fundamental principles of microbiology and microbial genetics.
This course will introduce you to fundamental principals of microbiology and microbial genetics. Microbiology is a broad subject and includes areas of fundamental and applied science. The course builds on and extends the brief introduction you had to the microbial world and genetics in first year courses and prepares you for third year microbiology (BIOL313) and genetics (BIOL330).
Students are expected to have theoretical and practical skills in microbiology and genetics appreciating: The development of microbiology as a scientific discipline Methods for studying microbes safely The range of microbial diversity and appreciate microbial systematics Microbial growth and physiology Aspects of applied and environmental microbiology The special tools and features of microbial genetics Fundamental research questions in genetics.

* Attendance at labs is compulsory (unless you have a medical certificate) and you need to pass 50% or more of all assessed work as well as the exam in order to be credited with this course and to advance to suitable third year courses. Students repeating this course will be exempt from labs with the approval of the course co-ordinator. The final mark for the course will be based entirely on the final exam.
