Description

An introduction to evolution: patterns and processes of evolution; mechanisms of evolution, adaptation, speciation and extinction.

Course Goals
To introduce the patterns and processes of evolution, and to develop an understanding of the
mechanisms of evolution, adaptation, speciation, extinctions and life history traits.

Learning Outcomes

  • An understanding of evolutionary theory
  • An understanding of the role of evolutionary theory in answering questions such as where
      species have come from, why are there so many different species, and the importance of
      evolution in everyday life
  • An understanding of the mechanisms of evolution at the genetic level
  • The ability to estimate phylogenetic trees
  • The ability to conduct and interpret basic population genetic analyses
  • An understanding of the process of speciation and species extinction.
