This course extends material given in BIOL213 and explores advanced food and agriculture microbiology, microbial ecology, disease and pathogenesis, and immunology. Additional topics in the field of applied microbiology including bioremediation, biofuels and biogeochemical engineering will also be covered. The entire practical component of the course consists of a research project.
The general aim of the course is to advance your microbiological knowledge by covering the key principles of • Culture selection and food microbiology• Agriculture (water, soil and gut)• Microbial ecology• Environmental microbiology• Pathogenesis/symbiosis• Biogeochemical processes and engineering• BiofuelsThe entire practical course consists of microbial research projects.
As a student in this course I will:Demonstrate an understanding of the processes involved in various diseases caused by microbes and the associated anti-microbial therapies (assessment task: final exam).Apply an understanding of the concepts of microbial biotechnology to applications in both food and environmental microbiology (assessment task: final exam).Design and critically evaluate experiments to explore microbial growth, physiology and test anti-microbial activity (assessment task: laboratory reports).Understand, interpret and evaluate experimental data and communicate scientific findings in a written form (assessment task: laboratory reports).Transferrable Skills RegisterAs a student in this course, I will develop the following skills:Scientific reading, writing and presentation: In most scientific jobs you will be required to read and understand scientific literature. Clear written and oral communication is essential for any professional careerExperimental design, microbiology experimental skills and data analysis: Important in any research focused jobs.
