Description

Darwinian natural selection, adaptation, molecular evolution and the neutral theory, speciation, extinction and biogeography.

Evolutionary theory in terms of species adaptations and diversity.

Learning Outcomes

How adaptation works, adaptive radiations with special reference to the Antarctic and New Zealand, how new species arise and why species go extinct, understanding phylogenies, the evolution of invasiveness and endemics, co evolution mutualisms.

Prerequisites

PAMS205 or BIOL271
In exceptional circumstances this prerequisite may be replaced by a high level of achievement in other courses as determined by the Head of School.
