Description

CHIN210 engages with the current academic trend of Sinophone studies in the global network. Separated from the traditional framework of China studies, Sinophone studies reconsiders the interconnectedness of China proper, its Autonomous Regions, and the overseas Sinophone communities with a focus on such topics as cultural history and landscape, cross-Strait relations, diaspora, postcolonialism, and globalisation.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, each student will:
1. Develop a sophisticated understanding of Sinophone studies and of how it is perceived in the global network;
2. Identify the evolving cultural trends of Sinophone communities;
3. Show a cross-cultural view of the Sinophone world;
4. Develop a global awareness by connecting Sinophone communities with New Zealand and the rest of the world;
5. Be able to deploy organised ideas in presentation and participate in class discussions;
6. Demonstrate academic writing skills, including providing an argument, gathering and organizing second-handed resources, and analyzing materials closely and critically.

Prerequisites

Any 15 points at 100 level from CHIN, or
any 60 points at 100 level from the Schedule V of the BA.
