Description

The history of the Greek world from Homer to the Hellenistic age.

The course covers the history of the Greek world from the Persian Wars to the death of Alexander the Great.  Students can see the Greeks develop (under an external threat) from insignificant city-states to the point when two of them, Athens and Sparta, aspire to "empire" both within and without Greece.  Although neither entirely succeeds, as a by-product of Philip's and Alexander's conquests Greek culture expands to cover most of the ancient Near East at the advent of the so-called Hellenistic Age when the course closes.
