Description

An introduction to Greek grammar and reading Greek.

An essential way to get to grips with the ideas and beliefs of any culture is to know its language. This course aims to teach beginners Ancient Greekā€”the language of the first poetry, drama, historiography and philosophy of the Western tradition. The language's grammatical structures are systematically explained and consolidated by reading passages, which illustrate them. We deal with simplified passages at first, then move on to texts modeled on, or lifted from, such authors as Plato, Aristophanes, Demosthenes and Euripides. Reading such texts can also provide insights into areas of Greek philosophy, the role of women in Athens, the legal system and the lampooning of public figures and institutions. The Greek taught in this course is Classical (Attic) Greek, not modern Greek. The Greek of the New Testament, however, should be quite accessible to anyone who has successfully completed CLAS134 and CLAS135.
