Description

A study of selected Greek texts and unseen passages, with emphasis on the development of knowledge of the language.

CLAS234: Intermediate Greek Authors 1 builds on what students have achieved in CLAS135 to deepen understanding of the Classical Greek language and culture as well as to broaden knowledge of Greek literature, especially dramatic and prose texts from Athens in the Classical period (i.e. fifth and fourth centuries BC).

Learning Outcomes

- ability to read texts closely modelled on ancient Greek authors of the fifth and fourth centuries BC
- ability to identify grammatical forms and their functions within texts
- enhanced understanding of ancient Greek grammar and extension of ancient Greek vocabulary
- enhanced understanding of literary genres, e.g. Old Comedy, Attic Prose, Oratory
- enhanced understanding of social and cultural life of Athens in the fifth and fourth centuries BC

Prerequisites

CLAS131 or CLAS135. Students without the prerequisite but with previous experience in the language may be admitted to the course at the discretion of the Programme Coordinator.
