In building on what students have achieved in CLAS235/335, CLAS415 aims to deepen their understanding of Ancient Greek language and literature through close readings of specific texts with reference to their historical and cultural contexts, and their legacy in antiquity and beyond. Texts to be read include selections from one or more of the following: Homer’s Iliad, Sophocles' Oedipus Tyrannus, Herodotus’ Histories.
- ability to understand the text in terms of its linguistic and technical components- ability to understand how the text reflects and engages with its historical and cultural context- ability to appreciate and discuss its literary and/or dramatic qualities, its intellectual content, etc. - ability to appreciate its appeal to ancient (as well as modern) sensibilities.
This course will provide students with an opportunity to develop the Graduate Attributes specified below:
Critically competent in a core academic discipline of their award
Students know and can critically evaluate and, where applicable, apply this knowledge to topics/issues within their majoring subject.
Globally aware
Students will comprehend the influence of global conditions on their discipline and will be competent in engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts.

Students must attend one activity from each section.
