Description

An introduction to computers, how they work, and what they can and cannot do. Software packages for word processing, spreadsheets, databases are taught. This is a non-advancing course.

COSC110 is for people who will use computers as part of their daily work, including efficient and effective use of applications such as the Internet, word processing, spreadsheets, databases and desktop publishing. Issues which will be discussed include why people find computers frustrating to use, the effect of computers on society, and what can be expected in the future. The course aims to give students a good idea of the capabilities of computers, familiarizes them with the current state of technology, and enables them to choose the appropriate hardware and software to apply in a variety of situations. The course does not teach programming.

Topics include human-computer interaction, telecommunications, health hazards for computer users, current trends and the future of computing, computers and society (security, ethics, privacy, crime, employment, etc.), and information of use for buying a personal computer.

In laboratories students learn to use a word processor, spreadsheet, database, and other selected applications, using both Windows and Macintosh computers.

The course outline provides an introduction to the course, including a synopsis and an overview of the lab work involved.

Timetable Note

The tutorial on Thursdays from 4-5pm is optional and held only as needed.
