Computer Science PhD
A full-time Ph.D. course requires a minimum period of enrolment of two years and must be completed within four years, unless there are special circumstances. The time is spent doing research and development work. Part-time enrolment (COSC791) is possible, for students with outside commitments.A Ph.D. degree is awarded for independent and original research which can be classed as a contribution to knowledge. At least part of this research must be worthy of publication. To demonstrate such an achievement a candidate is expected to submit a thesis acceptable to the supervisor(s) and two external examiners in both format and content. In most cases an oral examination covering the issues raised by the thesis will also be required. To be admitted to the Ph.D. programme students must have an Honours or Masters degree of high standard, with substantial Computer Science & Software Engineering content. There is no course work required. Although this is very much dependent on the student and topic, you should expect to take three to four years to complete a Ph.D.
