General principles of criminal law (liability for offences, overview of party liability, inchoate offences and general defences). Major features of criminal procedure (arrest, bail, legal controls on investigation (search warrants etc); commencement of prosecutions; pre-trial and trial procedure; appeals.
CRJU202 is designed to provide BCJ students, not also studying for a Law degree, with a satisfactory level of knowledge and understanding of the principles of criminal law necessary for persons working in, or with, the criminal justice system. The course will cover the general principles of criminal law, such as liability for offences, overview of party liability, inchoate offences and general defences.
A successful student will, by the end of the course, be able to: Demonstrate an understanding of the general principles of criminal law; Demonstrate an understanding of how these principles and features will be applied in individual cases; Engage in critical analysis of issues where the current law poses particular difficulties for individuals concerned with the criminal justice process and for criminal justice professionals.

Students must develop an understanding of the material covered in lectures. It is expected that students will spend at least 60 hours of independent study in this course in addition to examination and assessment preparation. This will require reading and study of articles, reports and monographs or texts which students may be referred.The course will be taught through 24 hours of lectures.
