Description

An introduction to international finance and open-economy macroeconomics. Topics covered include: the foreign exchange market; the behaviour of exchange rates; foreign exchange intervention and exchange rate regimes; international capital flows; global financial crises; and the international monetary system.

Learning Outcomes

  • At the end of this course, a successful student will be able to:
  • demonstrate a clear understanding of forward foreign exchange markets and transaction exchange risk
  • explain the concepts of a country’s balance of payments accounting and its net international investment position
  • explain the concepts of interest rate parity and purchasing power parity
  • measure real exchange rate risk
  • explain the major factors that determine and help forecast exchange rates
  • measure risk and return of international investments
  • determine the cost of equity capital in a global market
  • demonstrate how foreign currency futures and options can be used for hedging or speculative purposes
  • demonstrate how interest rate and currency swaps are used as instruments for risk management

Prerequisites

ECON201 or ECON206 or FINC203 RP: 15 points in MATH or Year 13 Math with Calculus
