Description

An overview of the effectiveness of the interventions and therapies commonly used in the treatment of various childhood disorders.

This course is about working with children with anxiety disorders, motivational problems, behaviour problems, and learning difficulties of various types. Equal weight is given to (a) the results of scientific research into the origins of these kinds of difficulties, their diagnosis, and the relative effectiveness of different kinds of interventions and (b) the development of your diagnostic skills and intervention skills with respect to each of these kinds of childhood difficulties. The emphasis is on what works and how we come to know what works.

Learning Outcomes

  • The aims of the course are:
  • To provide an overview of the kinds of interventions and treatments which are being used to facilitate the learning and development of children with commonly occurring types of childhood behaviour ‘disorders’ and learning difficulties.
  • To provide the opportunity for you to develop a set of criteria for distinguishing between effective and ineffective interventions.
  • To help you evaluate the effectiveness of interventions in the light of (a) our current understanding of the causes of each of the different kinds of behaviour ‘disorders’ and learning difficulties and (b) the evaluation research which has been undertaken to date.
  • To provide experience both in locating information about empirically supported interventions and in interpreting and evaluating the quality of the information obtained.
  • To introduce some of the skills which are involved in assessing and planning interventions for children with common kinds of behaviour ‘disorders’ and learning difficulties.
