This course is taught bilingually: in te reo Maori and English. It will critically examine Matauraka Maori: Maori ways of knowing and engaging with the environment in traditional and contemporary contexts as a means of developing a Kaupapa Maori based curriculum. Maori knowledge systems are valued and central to curriculum development. Students will also compare and contrast other indigenous epistemologies as frameworks for curriculum development in educational settings. The emphasis will be on Ngai Tahu contexts and content.
On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:1. Understand and acknowledge the histories, heritages, languagesand cultures of partners to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.2. Strengthen, and develop the use of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori inrelation to the context of te ao Māori and educational settings.3. Make explicit links between te reo Māori, tikanga Māori and Mātauranga Māori.
This course will provide students with an opportunity to develop the Graduate Attributes specified below:

Students will be aware of and understand the nature of biculturalism in Aotearoa New Zealand, and its relevance to their area of study and/or their degree.
