This course will provide opportunity for students to develop knowledge of the interpersonal and intrapersonal communication skills necessary for effective coaching for a range of coaching contexts.Interpersonal and intrapersonal communication skills are essential to coaches. Coaching is a profession in which knowledge of and the ability to use a wide range of communication skills is an important prerequisite for building positive relationships and optimum environments for learning.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:Exhibit an understanding of intra-personal and emotional literacy communication skills in relation to the students’ own coaching.Extend students’ awareness of cultural and gendered communication differences. Identify features of non-verbal and verbal communication Demonstrate effective listening skills.Demonstrate an understanding of assertiveness and apply this in a coaching contextDemonstrate effective ways of giving positive and negative feedback.Demonstrate an understanding of the processes of problem solving and conflict resolution.Identify ways to improve self-esteem. Demonstrate an ability to utilize reflective practice. Identify factors associated with stress and explain a range of stress management strategies that will assist both the coach and athlete in given situations.Discuss and evaluate techniques for anger management.
