Utilising prior knowledge from the areas of physiology, anatomy and biochemistry this course examines nutritional theory for healthy living and its application to exercise and sport. Healthy living, of which nutrition is an inherent factor, is an integral component of all exercise programmes. Nutritional knowledge is a fundamental basis for lifestyle education. It is important for sport coaches to understand nutritional theory to be able to address the nutritional needs of the general population, the specific requirements of sports participants and of the special populations encountered in different forms of sport.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:Explain the seven nutrients required by the body in terms of structure and function.Analyse the components and sources of the New Zealand Nutritional Guidelines, Healthy Food Pyramid and Five Plus a Day.Analyse fluid balance, and the importance of maintaining this for athletes, prescribe regimes to prevent and redress dehydration.Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of energy balance.Analyse individual diets and recommend any appropriate basic changes for healthy living, and to assist athlete performance.Analyse and evaluate the structure and function of training, competition and recovery nutrition.Produce a menu for specific athletes that incorporate energy needs and timing of consumption.Analyse the dietary needs of special populations.Provide guidelines for the management of nutritional deficiencies.Investigate and analyse specific nutritional supplements.
