This course examines the coaching theory and practice of empowerment for coaching. It will explore elements of critical theory and humanism and how they can be applied to coaching.Empowerment is an evolving paradigm that challenges traditional practices in coaching, which are characterised by coaches using command style coaching models, wielding total power and control over the athletic environment. Empowerment draws on humanistic coaching philosophy where an athlete-centred approach is paramount to athlete success and personal development. As an athlete-centred approach underpins the philosophy for the Bachelor of Sport Coaching, this is an essential course where students are required to conceptualise empowerment philosophy and apply this practice to their coaching.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:Critically evaluate and reflect on the concept of ‘humanism’Conceptualise and critique the meaning of athlete-centred coaching and empowerment in coaching.Critique the discourse of coach and athlete power relationships.Analyse and explore athlete success and personal development.Explore the notion of communities in an athlete centred environment.Analyse components of athlete centred approach or empowerment.
