Description

This course examines and applies practical coach pedagogy (learning theories and instructional models) to the sport environment. The course also extends pedagogical knowledge and application of the principles of motor skill learning from Coaching and Learning 1.

This course examines and applies practical sport coach pedagogy (learning theories and instructional models) to the sport environment. The course also extends pedagogical knowledge and application of the principles of motor skills’ learning from Coaching and Learning 1.

Coaching can be considered as teaching in a specialist environment. It is essential that the practitioner demonstrates knowledge of the theories, principles and practice of teaching and learning, including motor learning.  Students should continue to develop and refine their coaching skills and broaden their practical understanding and application of coaching models.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
Critique various coaching philosophies and articulate a personal coaching philosophy
Analyze and implement a variety of teaching / coaching instructional models, [this may include; Games Models (TGFU, Game Sense, Tactical Games), Personalized Systems of Instruction, Cooperative Learning, and Peer Teaching]
Understand and apply Hellison’s Social Responsibility Model
Understand and apply the Information Processing Model as it applies to sport coaching
Demonstrate an ability to plan a series of progressive sessions for a specific sport.
Demonstrate an understanding of and critically analyze theoretical positions of learning in relation to teaching/coaching models
Explain and apply teaching/coaching strategies
Demonstrate an understanding of Practice Theory and Transfer of Learning Theory
Discuss factors that contribute to a positive team environment / culture
Demonstrate the ability to include mental skills in coaching practice
Understand and apply Reflective Practice
Explain and reflect on various legal responsibilities of coaches
