The thesis is designed to give students the opportunity to conduct a substantial piece of educational research, building on knowledge and skills gained in course EDTL801 and other taught courses in the degree. The research should relate clearly to the degree's central subject of teaching and learning, and it may be methodological in focus. It is intended to provide students with an initial experience in a substantial empirical investigation as a background to further research. This course is also available through flexible mode.
Learning OutcomesThe thesis research shall enable participants to:1. identify a contemporary relevant educational topic, worthy of research and manageable within the time and credit constraints of a Masters thesis;2. consider ethical issues and carry out requirements of the CCE Ethical Clearance Committee;3. conduct a review of the relevant literature that locates the thesis with the content, methodology and theory of that literature;4. create a research design that communicates the intent of the research;5. present the previous learning outcomes as a research proposal;6. conduct accountable research, i.e. research that satisfies any criteria for rigorous research methodology or codes of ethics that might be put up against it, including descriptions and justifications of the collection and/or production and analysis of empirical materials;7. present a seminar to an audience of peers at the College of Education based on six months of engagement with the research;8. write a thesis of 20,000 to 30,000 words which outlines the research conducted on some aspect of teaching and learning, locates it within current literature or debate, and critically evaluates the findings and methodologies used.
