Uses children's drawing to explore different theories of learning.
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to learning theory. By the end of the course, students will feel comfortable with the processes involved in understanding and evaluating theories. The course considers learning theories and related research evidence. These are related to a study of children’s drawing. Theories regarding children’s learning that are studied include Howard Gardner’s Constructivist-cognition theory, B.F. Skinner’s Radical Behaviourism, Rangimaire Rose Pere’s Ako; Suzuki’s Talent Education; Stanley Greenspan’s the Emotional Basis of Learning; and Edwin Hutchins’ Cognition in the Wild.In the second and third terms, a project involving working with a child in learning to draw is used as the basis for an exploration of the theories. In the final term, the theoretical approaches are evaluated and the foundations of current learning theory are critiqued.Skills related to teaching children to draw will be covered in class.
