Description

This course looks at the nature, prevalence and causes of common childhood disorders and disabilities.

Disorders of childhood arise during the developmental period, and this course will take an approach based on the developmental processes within an ecological context. The course content will include readings, lectures, videos and activities contributing to the understanding and critical analysis of psychological and educational aspects of differences in developmental pathways. The course will cover foundational processes in the development of children with disorders, including genetic, prenatal, antenatal and postnatal causes and risk factors. Disorders in cognition and executive function, emotional and social development, and in physical development and health. Developmentally appropriate treatment approaches in educational and family contexts will be covered. Skills involved in accessing, understanding and evaluating information on disorders available on the Internet and in research articles will be taught within the course.
