This course provides an opportunity to develop an advanced understanding of child development research and theory and its application to children in a range of applied settings. Students will gain knowledge and skills in the conduct of development and family assessments, and undertake a supervised child development study.
The aim of this course is to provide students with an opportunity todevelop an advanced understanding of child development research andtheory. Emphasis is placed on the developmental processes shaping childdevelopment. In particular, students are encouraged to think criticallyabout the dynamic nature of life course development and thecontributions of biological, behavioural, family and social influencesto child development and risk. An awareness of these issues provides acritical foundation for both interpreting child development research andfor working with children in a range of applied settings, including thefamily, health, forensic and educational contexts. To support theintegration of academic course content with professional experience,students will also undertake a supervised, comprehensive childdevelopment study. This project provides students with an opportunityto gain knowledge and skills in the conduct of developmental and familyassessments. This course is designed for individuals: 1) who areworking with, or intend to work with, children and families in health,education and/or other applied settings; or 2) who wish to pursue aresearch career in the fields of developmental psychology, child healthor educational psychology.
