Description

Studies of counselling and psychological theories and their implication for practice. Practice in the skills of a problem-management model of helping.

In this course students learn and practise some introductory helping skills while they are learning about several major theories of counselling and psychotherapy. Students explore the stages and skills of a problem-solving model of helping and the essentials of good practice, such as, preparation for the first contact and recognition of the client’s perspective, self evaluation skills and specific helping skills (interviewing, working therapeutically, working with systems, working with people of different ages and cultures). There will be an emphasis on experiential learning such as role play and selfevaluation of a video.
