Description

A linear/matrix algebra course using MATLAB, with engineering applications and a component of statistics for engineers.

This is a second semester course for students doing electrical, mechatronics or computer engineering.

Themes include:
• using geometry to understand the behaviour of vectors, matrices and random variables
• the language of linear algebra (new words to describe the relationships between vectors and spaces)
• matrix factorizations (understanding matrices in terms of simpler matrices)

Topics include:
• more about systems of linear equations (LU factorizations, error estimates, iterative methods)
• applications of eigenvalues and eigenvectors (including Markov chains, population modelling and recurrence relations)
• projections onto subspaces, and QR-factorizations, with applications to finding least squares solutions
• linear regression and measuring goodness-of-fit

Learning Outcomes

  • to be proficient in the basic methods of linear and matrix algebra
  • to be able to use these methods and MATLAB to solve problems in engineering
  • to be able to use these methods and MATLAB to discover structures and patterns in engineering data
  • to develop written and oral communication skills, emphasizing the ability to explain what the mathematics means
