This course is part of the First Professional Examination for the BE (Hons) degree in Chemical and Process Engineering.The topics covered by this course are:• Organic and Bio-organic Chemistry• Analytical Chemistry (chromatography)• Physical Chemistry (surfaces and catalysis)
Learning OutcomesHave a working understanding of the fundamental organic chemistry including the three dimensional structure of molecules and general reactions of various functional groups.Understand how the basics of chemistry can be applied in the industrial production of polymers and biologically relevant molecules.Have a practical understanding of the theory and application of chromatography as a tool in chemistry.Understand the functioning of catalytic systems for chemical synthesis, with particular emphasis on catalysis at surfaces as it pertains to industrial reactions

Lectures: Three hours of lectures per week. Tutorials: One hour of tutorials per week. Details to be confirmed on ‘My Timetable’ and the Web.Students should note that in the Science Faculty that the average student is responsible for approximately 3.2 hours of additional study for each hour of lecture at the 200-level.
