Description

Mass and energy balance calculations, an introduction to chemical and process thermodynamics.

Topics
Mass Balances
 Weight volume and molar compositions of gas, liquid and solid mixtures.  Choice of convenient basis for solving problems.
 Material Balances of chemical processes.  Classification of processes.  General material balance equation.  Methods for solving material balances.  Balances on non-reactive systems.
 Material balances on reactive systems.  The chemical equation and stoichiometry.  Yield, Selectivity, Conversion.
 Material Balance of Systems with Chemical Reactor.  Recycle, Bypass and Purge streams.  Solving Material Balances.
 Combustion of Fuels.  Combustion process and terminology.  Excess air and gas analysis.   Material balances for combustion processes.


Energy Balances & Thermodynamics
 Thermodynamic concepts including internal energy and enthalpy, heat, work and the first law of thermodynamics.
 Phase diagrams and the Phase rule
 Application of the 1st law of thermodynamics to closed and open systems
 Calculations for processes involving ideal gases
 Energy balances for combustion processes

Visio: (venue to be advised)
This hands-on session will introduce the use of Visio for drawing flow sheets. This will be useful for producing diagrams for lab reports over the next two years and for flow sheets for Design in 2nd and 3rd Pro.


Works Visits
Visits to one industrial site will be arranged.  The visit will sample some of the more interesting Chemical and Process Industries in Christchurch.  The site visit will provide an opportunity to apply the theory of mass and energy balances to real industrial practice.  The visit will have a related assignment as part of the assessment for the course.  The class will be divided into two groups A and B for the visit.
