Description

Chemical engineering separation operations including distillation, evaporation, humidification/dehumidification, drying, gas absorption, filtration, centrifugation and crystallisation.

This course deals with process operations involving separations. The separation operations considered include: drying technologies, humidification/dehumidification, evaporation, distillation, gas absorption, liquid-liquid extraction, membrane separations, crystallization, ion exchange and leaching.

Learning Outcomes

  • At the end of the course the students are expected to be able to:
  • Understand and analyse drying, distillation, gas absorption and specified separation processes.
  • Select appropriate separation techniques for chemical processing.
  • Carry out detailed design calculations for separation processes.

TOPICS
This course aims to equip undergraduate students with clear fundamental knowledge required in the selection and design of industrial separation processes.  The course will cover the following topics (with approximate number of lectures indicated):
• Overview on separation operation (1L, SSP)
• Humidification and dehumidification (4L, SSP)
• Drying principles and technologies (5 L, SSP)
• Evaporation (2 L, SSP)
• Liquid-liquid extraction (3 L, MW)
• Crystallization (4 L, MW)
• Ion exchange (2 L, MW)
• Leaching and Washing (3 L, MW)
• Continuous/batch distillation (5 L, MC)
• Gas absorption processes (4 L, MC)
• Membrane separations (3 L, MC)

The material in the course will be assessed via a series of assignments, a test and a final exam.  The final exam will cover all materials in the course.
