Description

This course focuses on the priciples of bioseparation processes: cellular fractionation, filtration, chromatography, electrophoresis, immunoaffinity techniques and their application to various types of biomolecules. It includes a hands-on laboratory to separate a target microbially-produced protein by chromatography and assay the purity by electrophoresis.

• Biomolecular properties (6 lectures)
• Cellular fractionation and cell disruption techniques (5 lectures)
• Liquid chromatography separations (7 lectures)
• Electrophoresis (6 lectures)
• Immunoaffinity methods (4 lectures)
• Mammalian cell separations (2 lectures)
• Bioprocess case studies (5 lectures)

Learning Outcomes

  • At the end of this course, students will:

  • Have an overview of the separation and purification of biological materials.

  • Understand how to exploit biological molecular properties for their separation.

  • Obtain an overview of bioseparation principles to develop bioseparation strategies for complex biological mixtures.

  • Understand and apply the principles of process scale-up in bioseparation processes.

  • Apply optimization and scale-up principles to design or improve a bioseparation process.
