Processing technologies and systems for production of hydrogen, syngas, liquid fuel as well as heat and power from various energy resources including traditional fossil fuels (natural gas, crude oil) and renewable resources (such as biomass); energy related environmental issues and analysis; energy system optimisation; energy storage such as mechanical, electrochemical (batteries), and thermal energy storages; advanced materials for efficient energy storage/processing.
This course will introduce processing technologies and systems for production of hydrogen, syngas, liquid fuel as well as heat and power from various energy resources with focus on renewable resources (such as biomass). Energy related environmental issues and analysis, and energy system optimization will be covered. Energy storage including mechanical, electrochemical (batteries) and thermal energy storages, as well as advanced materials for efficient energy storage/processing will be introduced. The following topics are taught in this course:• Energy storage technologies including mechanical, electrochemical (batteries), and thermal energy storages; different types of vehicles with respect to energy sources; advanced materials for efficient energy storage/processing (6 L). • Heat and power generation (3L).• Hydrogen and syngas productions from biomass and solid wastes (8L): o Biomass and organic solid waste resources in New Zealand;o Gasification technology;o Pyrolysis technology;o Gas processing for hydrogen and syngas;o Introduction of bioprocesses for gas production. • Hydrogen from renewable electricity via water electrolysis (2 L)• Hydrogen use for energy (2L).• Liquid fuel, biodiesel and bio-ethanol production processes (3L). • CO2 capture technologies and CO2 reuse (3L). • Sustainability assessment for energy systems and optimisation (3L).

Understand the technologies and systems for production of liquid fuels, syngas, hydrogen from various renewable resources.Understand the technologies to mitigate the environmental issues in the energy sector with focus on CO2 capture.Be able to assess the efficiency and the sustainability of energy systems.

30 lectures plus 6 tutorials. Students are expected to spend 3 hours per week reviewing lecture content and preparing for tutorials.

ENCH483 is an optional course for 4th year students. However, this course is a required course, along with ENGR404 provided in the 3rd year of studies, for energy minor in the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering.
