Grades will be based on assessment of three assignments (20% on Conan Fee's material, 10% on Peter Gostomski's material and 10% on Chris Williamsons' material) and final exam 60%.

Part A assignment will be given out in the middle of Term 1 and will be due at the start of Term 2.  Part B assignments will be given out at dates confirmed by Chris Williamson and Peter Gostomski.

No extensions are permitted for individuals except on certifiable medical or compassionate grounds.

Course Content

Part A (Term 1)
Process economics. The main area covered is that of microeconomics as applied to industrial operations, including capital and operating cost estimation and investment appraisal with tax and depreciation effects. Financial calculations and time-value of money. Project contracting process and model forms of contracts are also introduced. If time allows, a Strategic Management section may include selected topics in long-term (strategic) planning, marketing, organizational behaviour and management structures. Instruction will be provided on the use of an important process simulation tool that includes process economic analysis, SuperPro Designer.

Course Content for Part B (Term 2)
Eleven lectures on hazard and risk identification; time management and teamwork; 2 lectures on use of Endnote and library databases (preparation for research projects); safety briefing for research project work; conceptual design (preparation for team design projects).

There are no prerequisites.  ENCH497 is a compulsory course.
