To introduce some of the basic physics, mathematics and applications of fluid mechanics in a civil engineering context.Lecture Topics:• Fluid properties• Hydrostatics• Control volume analysis of continuity, energy and momentum• Bernoulli equations• Flow in pipes
Subject to approval of the Dean of Engineering and Forestry.
....Lab ClassesEach student will participate in four laboratory experiments as an important component of the course. These experiments are concerned with the following topics:1 Sluice gate and hydraulic jump2 Flow measurements3 Free jets4 HydrostaticsAll measurements and calculations will be made and submitted on the same day that an experiment is performed.

....Final Examination:A 3 hour final examination will held at the end of the course. It will consist of four to five compulsory questions and each question will be worth 20 to 25 marks. The questions will cover all of the material covered in the course, including the lecture notes, laboratory projects and any information discussed in the lectures or the tutorials. The final exam is closed book, but students will be able to refer to the supplied summary notes during the exam. They may also write their own notes on the pages of the summary notes, but they cannot bring additional pages or material into the exam.....Quizzes There will be five quizzes during the semester and each one is worth 4% of the final grade. The quizzes will be conducted under conditions normal for an examination.
