Loads and load paths in buildings and bridges. Design calculations for timber and steel structures. Engineering drawing. Construction and testing of simple structures.
This course is an introductory course consisting of a bridge design part and a building design part. The objective is to familiarise the students with fundamental structural design processes. The course covers conceptual designs, design calculations, bridge model testing and structural element testing.
The learning objectives of the building design part are:1. Understand load paths and load types for a typical building structure;2. Get familiar with load combinations and know how to use NZ load standards3. Get familiar with ultimate limit state (ULS) design & serviceability limit state (SLS) design for a building structure4. Know how to calculate strength demand on structural members5. Know how to design beams, columns, walls and lateral bracing systems 6. Understand the theory of compression members7. Get familiar with engineering drawings of buildings
