This course is designed to build on the Signals and Communication course by giving a more in-depth treatment of communications engineering. Issues such as baseband transmission, digital modulation and reception, equalization, communications systems, queuing theory, error control coding and networking will be covered as will new developments, in the process of teaching Communications.Topics covered include:• Baseband pulse transmission• Signal space• Digital modulation and reception• Equalization• Communication systems• Error control coding• Queuing theory• Networking
This course aims to give students a more in-depth understanding of selected areas communications engineering and an introduction to the analytical tools to design systems and analyze their performance. At the end of this course, the student will be able to:Describe basic networking concepts and techniques.Encode and decode block and convolutional codes.Analyze the distance and error correction capabilities of error control codes.Represent convolutional codes in terms of state diagrams and trellises.Perform modulation and demodulation using PSK, QAM and FSK.Calculate the error probability of various modulations including PSK and QAM.Describe an OFDM system.Specify and analyze filtering and line coding specifications and requirements for digital transmission.Develop equalization strategies and configurations for mitigating the effects of intersymbol interference in digital systems.
